Our buildings and properties department is dedicated to the success and satisfaction of Cornell AgriTech, staff, students and campus visitors. Over 50 buildings and properties (B&P) personnel are dedicated to keeping our labs, greenhouses, farms, offices, grounds, classrooms, vehiclesand equipment operating.

Position Summary:

Assist with the daily operations of the greenhouses at Cornell AgriTech including watering, fertilizing, planting, along with monitoring facility mechanical and environmental control equipment. Provide plant care for research projects, including application of pesticides as part of an integrated pest management program, and proper filing of required documentation. Mow lawns, prune and perform other grounds work as needed. Operate and maintain greenhouse tractors, mowers, sprayers, edgers, spreaders, and power tools. Maintain close and effective communication with research project personnel and Greenhouse and Grounds Manager to provide optimal plant growth and care as required by specified protocols. Run vent compatibility checks; perform minor troubleshooting; inspect, position, and clean temperature-sensing devices. Provide general cleaning services in greenhouse facilities. Work schedule will require occasional weekend and holiday watering of the greenhouses.


Required Qualifications:

Formal training beyond a high school diploma of one-year college coursework, minimum 6 months experience in greenhouse research and maintenance of plants in controlled environment. Must be able to concentrate during repetitive tasks to ensure accuracy; must be able to work outside at any time of year in Western, NY under Cornell health and safety guidelines. Experience with operation of basic equipment and machinery. Familiarity with computer applications including word processing, spreadsheets, e-mail, and web browsers. Must be willing and able to become a NYS Certified Pesticide Applicator, and must obtain and maintain full Pesticide Applicator Certification within first six months of employment. Must possess and maintain valid driver license and undergo a successful driver background check. Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds, and undertake repetitive physical activities. Must possess sound judgment, excellent reasoning and decision-making skills, meticulous record keeping and ability to work with diverse personalities. Must be able to work under pressure with a great deal of initiative. Must have excellent organizational skills with the ability to prioritize multiple projects. Ability to work well with others is required while creating a high-quality and respectful work environment. Must be able to work independently while supporting the efforts of an overall team. Ability to communicate with tact and diplomacy with a wide range of internal and external constituencies is a must.


Preferred Qualifications:

Associates Degree in Horticulture, with two or more year's greenhouse experience preferred. Experience in a research environment and full NYS Pesticide Applicator Certification.
